Weight Medication

A Medical Option Within Lifestyle-Based Care

Weight loss medications can be an important tool for some patients as part of a comprehensive lifestyle medicine approach.

At Northeast Medical Practice, we believe that sustainable weight management always begins with foundational lifestyle habits—nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and behavioral change. However, for many individuals, obesity is a chronic medical condition influenced by complex hormonal, metabolic, genetic, and environmental factors.

In these cases, lifestyle changes alone may not be enough to achieve or maintain a healthy weight. When appropriate, medication can provide additional support to help patients reach meaningful and lasting results.

When Medication May Be Helpful

Weight loss medications may be considered when:

  • Lifestyle interventions alone are not achieving sufficient results

  • There are medical conditions related to weight (such as insulin resistance, prediabetes, or fatty liver disease)

  • Weight is significantly impacting overall health or quality of life

  • Additional metabolic support is needed to help sustain long-term progress

Evidence-Based Treatment Options

Dr. Berger prescribes only FDA-approved medications for the treatment of obesity and related metabolic conditions.

These may include:

Injectable GLP-1–based therapies

  • Ozempic

  • Wegovy

  • Mounjaro

  • Zepbound

These medications work by influencing appetite regulation, satiety, and metabolic signaling, helping patients feel fuller sooner and maintain reduced caloric intake more consistently.

Oral medications

  • Phentermine

  • Contrave

  • Qsymia

These medications act through different pathways to support appetite control, energy balance, and weight reduction.

Personalized Medical Decision-Making

Every patient is evaluated individually. If medication is being considered, Dr. Berger will conduct a detailed review of:

  • Medical history and family history

  • Current health conditions and medications

  • Weight history and prior attempts at weight loss

  • Expected benefits, risks, and side effects of treatment

  • How medication integrates with lifestyle-based care

This ensures that any treatment plan is safe, appropriate, and aligned with your health goals.

If both physician and patient agree that medication is appropriate, it will be prescribed and sent directly to your pharmacy.

Insurance, Coverage, and Access

Coverage for weight loss medications varies widely depending on your insurance plan. Many of these medications require prior authorization, which involves documentation of medical necessity.

Our team assists with this process by submitting the required forms and clinical information to support approval whenever possible.

Please note:

  • Medication costs are not included in the concierge membership fee

  • Out-of-pocket costs may vary significantly depending on insurance coverage

A Supportive, Guided Approach

Weight loss medication is never used in isolation. It is part of a structured, medically supervised lifestyle program designed to improve:

  • Metabolic health

  • Body composition

  • Energy and physical function

  • Long-term weight stability

The goal is not just weight reduction, but helping patients achieve a healthier, more sustainable baseline that supports long-term well-being.
